IRS is very misleading on the rebate checks they are sending out.  I prepared my taxes in early February and had my refund direct deposited.  My rebate check should have been direct deposited by 5/9/08, so I thought.  What they DON'T tell you is that if you used any service to file your taxes, such as Turbo Tax, your rebate will not be direct deposited, it will be mailed.  So thinking m y check would have been deposited by tomorrow, I made arrangements with my money and am now going to have all sorts of return check charges and no way to pay for what I owe, my rent to be exact!  They tell me now that my check will be sent to me on 6/27/08! I understand that this is money that wasn't expected, but the IRS should have notified everyone of this policy.  I even received a letter from them about a month ago telling me to expect my refund to be direct deposited.  So basically, I'm screwed!!

don't count your chickens before they hatch; or write checks on money that's not in your account!

OMG, I was going to write about the chicken thing myself!!! Confused, one word of advice. Don't count on ANYTHING in life... That's like counting on raises during the year, or bonuses right before Christmas to get presents. It's a bad idea because there are NO guarantees. You must protect yourself. You're the only one that can.

So, when you buy a lottery ticket, do you also spend the winnings before you actually win ??

Never write the check before the money is in the bank! I am sorry about your dilemma!

We used taxslayer.com and ours was in a week ago. Sorry confused, I am with the rest of the above comments. This next part may be none of my business, but what had you of done if that money wasn't a part of the equation? Was there another way to pay the bills? Don't get me wrong, I'm not independently wealthy, and I too, like many Americans live paycheck to paycheck from time to time. But I made like that wasn't even coming to town.

I agree with all of you that I am a fool but unfortunately, I am one of the few that trusts everyone. I figured it was a good time to get my brakes done on my car since they were down to the floor and was very unsafe driving, but I have to drive my car to work to support my kids. What would I have done? Not fixed my brakes. Yes, it was a dumb decision. I know I am at fault, that is not my complaint. I just think it is ridiculous that the IRS did not notify us that some direct deposits would be sent as checks. But you know what, it doesn't matter, life goes on. My kids are healthy and thats all I need. But thank all of you for listening.

If you used a prep service and took their fees out of your refund then yes you will be mailed a check. Because Turbo Tax for instance if you take your fees out of the refund sets up a temporary account for you in Santa Barbara and then your refund is deposited there, fees removed and then that bank transfers it to you. If you pay the fees separately then the refund comes from the Treasury and you will get direct deposit.

My issue was I split my refund between 3 accounts, paid the fees separately. The really nice lady at the IRS checked with her supervisor and finally found the small print that said if you request more than one account you will get mailed a check...so instead of May 2nd I wont get mine until first week of June. But at least I know now. So it's all good.

hope this helps

How do you even know how much your check is to spend it? We have no kids, our whopper check was not very stimulating. It will buy a tank of gas and a week of groceries.

Guys this is not a REBATE.

This is welfare, paid from borrowed funds. In other words, we just took money from our grandkids.

There is no money to REBATE. It's all debt.

The way I see it, this is an advancement on all the money I have paid into social security that I'll never see. And the beat goes on...

Gosh JP, I've been trying to tell people this for ages. Maybe they'll listen to you. Some or all of you better save it because it will either lower your refund next year or you'll be writing them a check on 4/15/09. My friend who does taxes for a living told her son to put it in the bank and act like he never got it.

you should never take the IRS at their word. they're a-holes so they're not going to give any detail, they expect you to call and find out.

I used the H&R; Block service where they take the fees out, and H&R; Block had it listed that if you used that service that you will receive your check by mail, and to look at the mail schedule to know when you are going to get it... Sorry to hear that Turbo Tax (or the service you used) didn't inform you of this...

There has been many misleading things with the rebate checks.couples was thinking they would get $1200 Dollars but most are getting $600.if you have kids then more then likley you will get the 1200.

For the person who spent the money before it reached the bank . . . what were you thinking??
We have our money earmarked for a pet project, however, that project will not begin until we see the deposit in our account! Don't blame the IRS - or your bank; put the blame where it belongs - - on YOU. That's like writing a check several days before you know a deposit is going to be made. It just doesn't work that way. You don't withdraw money before it is in the bank. That's just the way it is. I hope this has been a lesson well learned for you. We are living in hard times and honey it will probably get worse. Our stimulus check is supposed to be deposited May 16. Until I see the deposit shown on our bank statement, we will not entertain using a penny of it.

Hey you guys, did you also know that next year you will have to show your stimulus check amount as unearned income when you file your taxes? Enjoy. : )
