This article says it could

Who knows, but I don't think it can be completely ruled out.

All you people driving these 50,000 pound tank SUVs that need an extension ladder to get in... 50 miles each way to work by yourself, get out your visa card!

So what is the MPG for your ride? 16 city, 24 highway?
Sure am glad I sold the Suburban, 14city/18 highway which is not bad considering the size.
I do wonder though if using the E85 would have been cheaper now instead of trading..Paid $36K for it, sold it for $26.5K 2 1/2 years later.

I feel bad for all of the journeymen worker's. Many of those guys HAVE to drive a truck.
I'm doing ok, pulling my 3500lb trailer I get 16MPG.

Ya my vehicle gets about 17 everyhwere. Surprisingly, it got 18 on E85.

I'm like you, though, I pretty much have to have a big vehicle with a family of 5.

And I only commute 7 miles to work, and that's on the bike whenever the weather is good.

Not trying to be self-righteous. People can drive whatever they want, just so long as they're willing to pay.

See that is what I consider to be very dumb, I see folks (my niece as a prime example) with no intent on using or needing a pick up truck, yet drive from 58 highway & Holmes in Belton to Pershing & Main everyday. Then complain how much gas they use just going back & forth to work.

Yeah, we have an SUV for the six in our family, but we have another smaller car for most of our commuting.
I feel sorry for people who have long commutes and here is a scary thought- What happens when that occurs? 10 a gallon, you cannot exactly bicycle to Overland Park, which means you find closer employement OR you move...and property values are in the toilet with the housing industry atm... I can see people with no choice migrating downtown to live and work...subburbs will either become ghost towns or intertwined with commercial zones just so people can afford ro work and live.

I have a 4 cylinder Chevy Cobalt. I get about 400 miles per tank, around 25 to 28 average covering city and highway driving. Never understood the SUV, ie a glorified pick-up, craze. They aren't safe, horrible to park, unable to get in the garage, and basically useless. But that is just me.

Well they are a bit safer than making your fourth child ride in the trunk, front bumper or on a lap.

You know, folks use to do that all the time and had a station wagon with the extra seat in the back and was still better than an SUV. And from ones I have ridden in and seen loaded, the wagon had more room all around.

Marketing ploy to make money. The Surburban, the original 'SUV', never sold for over $22K, second some marketing person came up with SUV, same Surburban became $35K to $40K plus.

I always buy used..a 2005 was the year for the extra third row and I latched onto it.
I remember those old station wagons....LOL...and if they'd just make em again, we might have done that instead.=)

Yeah, but the third seat in the back was always so hot because of that great big tailgate glass...

golfer, the SUV craze was in response to federal laws regarding gas milage on cars if I recall.

They build a station wagon on a truck frame to get around the mileage limitations on passenger cars.

Another example of the inefficacy of gov't regulation.

I think the Wrangler (CJ??) was the original SUV since it's military conception.....

jp - you are right. Because trucks, including SUV's, are considered Recreational Vehicles and are subject to safety and mileage requirements of an automobile. Vans and minivans are also considered RVs.

It won't get there because at that price it would destroy the economies of the entire world.

I have this odd feeling that there is more oil on this planet than we either know or are told.

E85 is not the answer and neither is ethanol.

We do need to come up with something that is renewable and easier and cheaper to produce than oil.

But the auto industry knows and the oil companies know if it goe smuch higher than demand will drop and so will their profits. They have to keep that happy medium.

jp - I actually meant that trucks, therefore SUVs, minivans and vans are NOT subject to the same safety standards and mileage requirements of automobiles.

I love to discuss political philosophy. The problem I have is that liberals often assume I'm conservative and convserervatives often assume I'm liberal. It's because I'm neither. I'm libertarian, which means I believe in both social and economic freedom. I don't do personal attacks. I won't respond to yours, and I won't initiate one against you. So save yourself some time if you're thinking of flaming me!
