Every year when "Administrative Assistant" day rolls around, we shower ours with flowers, gifts, and praise. We take up a collection, we buy a card, we all sign it and woo these people into bliss. But I have a question about this practice: WHY?

WHY should I give you a card, give you flowers, do cartwheels and seranade ANYONE just for doing his or her job? We all work for a living. Most of us do the best we can. We all realize that there are both bad and good parts of our job. At some point everyone gets dumped on by someone as part of his or her job description. GET OVER IT.

When is truck driver's day? Or radio disclaimer reader guy's day? Or attorney's day? Or parking lot attendant's day?

This is ridiculous. it's all part of the "everyone gets a ribbon, because everyone is a winner" mentality that the bleeding heart insanity is perpetuating.

Do you job, collect your paycheck, be proud of what you do. You don't need cheerleaders just because you're doing what's expected of you.

I hope this is not a cheap shot at all the women who go to work every day because their husbands don't make enough money to support the family.

Of course not, rosco. If you read my posts you'll find out very quickly I'm a flaming social liberal (as my bio points out).

People read sexism and racism into everything searching, you know that.

Can't agree with you more JP!
Why should you be rewarded for doing what your paid to? Let the Boss "reward"

I wish I had a JOB.

Does anyone need some land developed?
I've designed some pretty nice Sub-divisions around here.
Never got any thanks for it though, just a pay check.

Peace.

To some extent I agree but there are many times I have seen admins go above and beyond. We have some great ones where I work and they truly do a great job. They make life easier for many of the employees that don't want to deal some of the most redundant and annoying tasks. And a lot of times they know more of the state of the organization than those they report to.

Those admins who go above and beyond SHOULD be recognized and rewarded, jdem.

When we do it for all of them, well, it means less to those who are the cream of the crop.

I absolutely think we should show our appreciation but it should be in everyday things. Offering to help a little here or there through out the year, really what does flowers and gifts do for someone for very long?

I do not believe there should be a whole day set aside, because to be "fair" we would need to set aside a day for every job. There really is no job less important than another because without them all none could function properly.

Gee, should we do away with Mothers' Day and Fathers' Day? Afterall, all they did was have a few minutes of fun followed by a lifetime of sacrifice. We could have an Aunts' Day, Uncles' Day, Grandparents' Day, Cousins' Day, Say Hello to a Stranger Day.......

Or, we could work on making other people feel appreciated EVERY day.

(Except liberals....no one can appreciate a liberal) :-)

There are some of us that just do their jobs, or there are those of us who give 150% and work hard to keep our bosses' asses out of a sling! The latter is the category I am in! I have a great boss that appreciates his staff. He not only tells us that during Admin Asst Day, but he tells us that throughout the year as well. He's thankful he has employees that really put for an effort, and not just show up to get things done because they have to but because we WANT to!

Good points, MissNancy, but there is a difference between parenting and doing a job.

Everyone is expected to do a job to pay his or her bills. Having a child and raising it well is above and beyond the call of duty. Furthermore, it's a thankless job until the kids are in their 20s (or maybe never), so I'm all for mothers and fathers day!

Ever wonder why only movies and TV shows have credits? (There was a commercial a couple of decades ago that encouraged people to put their names on all their work. And, yes, this commercial had credits.)

We should all get credits - and, failing that, credit.

Isn't a phone directory the same as a credit list scrolling up the screen at 600 words per minute?

My wife is an administrative assistant and she likes to recognized for the work she does in which is much more than getting the boss coffee. She is Microsoft certified and produces letters and worksheets for a large insurance company here in historic Independence. I think the flower thing and gifts were created by the folks that are profiting from it. She would rather be recognized with a bonus or a raise. Flowers die and usually the gift is a fancy pen that don't last as long as a 19 cent bic. I work parttime delivering the flowers, I need a flower delivery drivers day. Yeah! How about this Wednesday? Yeah.

funny X. :)

jp, I agree with your though behind your comments. It is the same thing that I think of maybe some minority fathers, and to a large extent any fathers. Making a point to point out that they work and are raising their kids. Why even say that? Isn't that what you are SUPPOSED to do with your kids? Actually, I think Chris Rock had a joke about that.

I love to discuss political philosophy. The problem I have is that liberals often assume I'm conservative and convserervatives often assume I'm liberal. It's because I'm neither. I'm libertarian, which means I believe in both social and economic freedom. I don't do personal attacks. I won't respond to yours, and I won't initiate one against you. So save yourself some time if you're thinking of flaming me!
